About the event
Our journey begins outside the former home of Mary Russell Mitford. The walk then takes us through the town’s literary history, showcasing the works of authors who found inspiration here. Jane Austen’s early education in Reading, Michael Bond’s upbringing in Reading and the birth of the Paddington Bear stories, Mary Russell Mitford’s evocative descriptions of Melford Regis, John Man’s letters to a stranger in Reading – Reading’s influence on literature is far-reaching. Links to T.E Lawrence, Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens are also included. We’ll also visit public art installations and murals that celebrate the town’s contemporary creative spirit.
